Quetzalcoatlus: the Largest Flying Creature
Quetzalcoatlus (Pterosaur)
Artist: Lawrence Lin
You may have heard of the Quetzalcoatlus before, the largest pterosaur with a wingspan of 11 meters, but have you ever imagined what it really looks like or seen its depiction? If the Pteranodon in Jurassic Park is the largest flying creature you have seen in the media, remember the Quetzalcoatlus presented here is another species of massive flying prehistoric creature and the largest flying creature in history!
This reconstruction of mine was created off the most recent findings on the Quetzalcoatlus and Pterosaurs in general. The Quetzalcoatlus is famous for being the largest pterosaur, but this fact is only interpreted from a few wing bones (see images below). In reality, paleontologists don't have much information on the Quetzalcoatlus, and can only make inferences on how it looks based off of other pterosaurs. You may question its ability to fly because of the massive size of its head and neck. It was so massive that some paleontologists have even made claims that it wouldn't be able to fly because of its massive size. Nowadays, paleontologists have reached the general consensus that, despite being massive, the Quetzalcoatlus Northropi employed multiple energy saving strategies to be able to fly. Some of these energy saving strategies include quad-launching, which means launching off the ground with a leap on all fours, and soaring. Take a look at the large wingspan below and you will see why it is an exceptional soarer!
BTW, some of you may not have realized that Pterosaurs are not actually dinosaurs. They share a common ancestor but are classified differently.
